Independent publishing is under threat: tight budgets, limited reach, shrinking space. Keep Publishing Independent! funds the risk, resolve, and resources needed to push back.
Independent publishing is having a moment, but not yet a future.
In 2024, every title on the International Booker Prize shortlist was published by an independent press.
Across fiction, poetry, and translation, independent publishers are where the most original and urgent work is emerging.
But they’re under immense pressure. Budgets are stretched. Teams are small. Distribution is limited.
The books are there. The readers are out there. But the infrastructure to connect the two is missing.
Keep Publishing Independent! is a charity created to support the future of independent publishing.
Changing the model
Our mission is to change the way publishing is going. In the old days, publishers used to be owned by people, today most publishing houses are owned by five conglomerates where the primary purpose is profit.
Putting quality first
Genre agnostic, we aim to elevate voices and ideas otherwise overlooked by profit-led models. By supporting publishers who share our values, we help to bring to light stories that challenge, inspire and resonate. KPI operates on a simple belief, literature should be judged by its quality, not by its commercial potential.
Generating support
KPI reverses this trend through grants and structural resources to support independent publishers, limited by tight budgets, overwhelmed by distribution challenges, and often overlooked by mainstream media.
